Implant Material
Breast implants can be filled with either a silicone gel filling or a sterile saltwater filling. Both implant types offer unique benefits and stunning results that can last for several years on end.
- Silicone Implants: Silicone implants are filled with a viscous gel that can mimic the natural feel and movements of organic breast tissue. They are typically recommended for patients with thinner or smaller amounts of natural breast tissue. (1) Dr. Depew additionally offers specialized “gummy bear” implants which are filled with a more cohesive silicone gel that can maintain their shape, even when the implant shell is punctured or ruptured.
- Saline Implants: Saline implants are filled with a sterile saltwater filling. Dr. Depew places these implants in the chest empty and fills them up afterwards, giving you a greater degree of variability and customization. (1)

Preparation
Once you have decided to proceed with your breast augmentation, Dr. Depew will provide you with a set of personalized instructions to help you prepare. These will vary depending on the details of your procedure, but they typically include directions such as:
- Avoiding Certain Medications: Refrain from taking blood-thinning medications and supplements leading up to your procedure.
- Arranging Transportation Home: Have someone drive you home after your procedure, as you will not be able to do so yourself.
- Coordinating Care: Ask a trusted friend or family member to stay with you for the first 24-48 hours of your recovery.
- Running Errands: Fill your prescriptions and rearrange your home so it is a comfortable recovery environment.
- Ceasing Substances: Stop consuming nicotine or alcohol in the weeks before your procedure, as well as the weeks following it.
- Undergoing Testing: If needed, undergo any medical tests or labs that Dr. Depew has requested of you.
Procedure
When you arrive for your procedure, a member of the Depew Plastics team will lead you to a private treatment room where your skin will be cleansed. You will then be transported to the operating room where you will receive general anesthesia.
Dr. Depew will place an incision that extends horizontally across the crease beneath your breasts. Through this incision, he will proceed to make a pocket either above the muscle (subglandular placement) or below the muscle (subpectoral placement). On rare occasions, he may also elect to place your implants half above and half below the muscle (subfascial placement). He typically recommends subpectoral placement for most patients, but he will converse with you about this during your consultation.
Dr. Depew will then place your breast implants in your chest before evaluating the region to ensure your results look even and harmonious. He will then suture the incisions shut and dress the region to protect it before allowing you to rest in a recovery suite.
Recovery
Dr. Depew performs each procedure on an outpatient basis, which means that he will release you from his care on the same day he completes your corrections. He uses the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol, which he will explain to you before your procedure and will be provided with your post-operative instructions. This is a process that many leading surgeons have adopted to shorten the recovery time of their patients.
You can expect some initial swelling, bruising, or tightness around the breasts, but these effects are temporary and will subside on their own in the following weeks. You may manage them with certain approved medications and plenty of rest. During the procedure, you will also be provided with a garment that you will wear home. This garment will limit additional swelling and maintain your new curves as your breast tissues heal and settle.
We recommend taking light walks and incorporating gentle movements into your routine as soon as you feel ready to, as they can promote proper circulation to the treated regions. You may then begin to return to work and other nonstrenuous tasks after resting for approximately 1 to 2 weeks. However, you will need to continue refraining from anything strenuous or arduous until Dr. Depew has cleared you to return.
Results
You will be able to notice immediate improvements after your procedure, but your results will continue to refine as any residual swelling dissipates and the breasts settle into place.
